The first six-issue arc follows an android scientist SYSL, the sole survivor of Expedition v9 to the Outskirts, the wild territory outside New Nexus.
SYSL is an explorer at heart. At the age of 37, she feels trapped in the mundane live in New Nexus and longs to escape past the city limits. It is this frustration that makes her feel like an outsider in her own home. She despises the city and so she pours herself into her research, exploring the logs of previous expeditions in hopes of understanding the origins of robotics. But her academic research is consistently sidelined by public trends. Could Expedition v9 be her chance to finally produce work of monumental importance?

CYRA was once a highly influential bot in New Nexus. Early in her career she led Expeditions v1-v6 into the Outskirts. Although most of her time there is a mystery, the few logs she has shared are highly coveted in The Archive. Her logs helped Nexians make many advancements in therapeutic mods, computational health and even bioengineering. She became the youngest High Council Administrator and remained in that position for short cycle before she was ousted. Public records state that the reasons for her departure were health-related; she was diagnosed with early Fragmentation- an inability to log bytes into the Framework. Fragmentation left her immediate memory shattered and non-sequential. The other members of the High Council feared that her extensive interaction with Barebones was the cause of her illness and decided to cancel all expeditions into the Outskirts.

An apprentice of SYSL’s mother, ADYN accompanied her on Expeditions v5 – v6 into the Outskirts. Young ADYN also kept a watchful eye on SYSL during her mother’s absence and later became a valued mentor to SYSL. In Audit 1 ADYN has just earned the ascension to High Council Administrator, and managed to get SYSL approved to join Expedition v9.
